Scorpion-like Jumping Spider

DSC07253.jpg

I`m back in India and the posting can now resume. I was out checking out my new (ish) Minolta 100mm F2.8 D Macro lens, when I came across this spider which looked more like a scorpion.

Its body was a metallic mix of purple and black which it uses to emphasise its scorpion-like features. The remaining part of the body is an almost transparent color, which is not easily visible at first glance.

I wonder what the purpose of such mimicry is – perhaps it is in avoiding predators, which may mistake it for a threat?

I used my Sony A500 built in flash to light these images. I think I`m missing out on a ring-flash.

  3. Most spiders have venom, but they are not effective enough to be poisonous to humans. I believe thats true for this one too.
