Caterpillar Building Cocoon

SONY DSC

A few weeks back, as I was on my macro round, I came across this caterpillar of a Burnet moth engaged in building its cocoon. I sat with it for as long as I could and got images as detailed as I could get. The images below show it as it turns completely around within the cocoon and coats itself another coating of silky web.

… and half an hour later I returned to it to check on the progress.

…it was still spinning away. I returned the following week to try and get an image of a finished cocoon but it had disappeared. Maybe something ate it, or perhaps it was camouflaged too well for me.
